Where to purchase tights, pantyhose, & stockings

Where in the world do women purchase their pantyhose and tights?

  • Everywhere in the world to shop for pantyhose, tights, and stockings:

Back in the day before the Internet,  everyone was buying their pantyhose at brick & mortar locations, and Hanes/L'eggs was the predominant  and most visible purveyor of women's hosiery in the universe.  They pioneered the ubiquitous L'eggs pantyhose packaged in plastic eggs-- which were found virtually everywhere-- and was the only way to shop. In the fourth quarter of the  20th Pantyhose were fashionable and stylish. They  were strategically placed their revolving wire rack L'eggs  displays in most chain pharmacies, K-Marts, chain supermarkets-- they were virtually everywhere. Consider the merchandising challenge-- all the different colors, sandalfoot, reinforced toe, control top, sheet-to-waist, light support, ultra-sheer,  and then the variety of sized from petite, to queen size,  ad infinitem!  Literally dozens of different variations of colors types, and sizes.

With the aging baby-boomers and maturing Gen X'ers, and the evolution of society  that transitioned from dressier culture to the post women's lib culture of the 70's that embraced comfortable and casual attire for women such as the blue jeans revolution (if you're old enough to remember Jordache and Gloria Vanderbilt jeans fad), stretch pants, and polyester pants suits as the acceptable alternative to stockings and dresses.

Back in the day, most upscale & luxury department stores had hosiery departments.  Nowadays, considering the numerous concatenations of size, style, color, etc,  women don't browse through retail stores looking for tights.  Retail space is expensive, and calculated by brick-and-mortar retail store revenues per square foot, and dedicating an entire section to hosiery is simply not cost effective.

The Internet was a  20th century's 11th hour revolution that changed the world,  and the way the world shopped, and marketed merchandise

But was it a revolution, or an evolution?  It quickly became the more effective successor in technology advancement and  product development and -- just as sure at the telephone replaced the telegraph,  the industrial revolution invented machine-made production-line goods- as opposed to handmade, and the cell phone replaced wired landlines.   The Internet was thr perfect storm and the new frontier of specialty retailers, and a effective space to drive new fashion trends and styles. Ask Sara Blakel-- who started Spanx by cutting off the feet of support pantyhose-- beginning a new fashion trend... which has morphed into the industry giant.

With several new generations of Millennials and now Gen Z's  becoming conspicuous consumers-- they needed something different than their grandmothers vanilla pantyhose. Pantyhose became a thicker dernier, more durable, and  patterned plethora of varieties, colors, and sizes-- to appeal to (or drive) the tastes of the new generations of emerging consumer demographic.
